First Line Management

The purpose of this series of posts is to provide first-line managers (those managing individual contributors) with information to help them successfully fulfill their role and meet their challenges.

These posts will be organized into three subject sections: Skills, Time Application, and Work Values. Each section contains information about multiple topics within that overall subject. The information on each topic is brief, contained in a few paragraphs.

Many of the topics in these posts come from a list of items relevant to first-line managers. The source of the list is Drotter Human Resources, Inc. The list was published in the book The Leadership Pipeline, by Ram Charan, Stephen Drotter, and James Noel, 2001, Jossey-Bass, ISBN 0-7879-5172-2. I added a few topics as well. The information presented for each topic was distilled from my management experiences, unless otherwise noted.

I created these posts to encourage first line managers to think about developing their expertise as managers. They of course represent my opinions and certainly not all experts will agree with the contents. They are not official documents of any company and do not in any way represent any company's policy or training.
